Why do people want to ban violent video games?
I don’t understand. For me, violent video games don’t make me angry or violent. They are a way of letting off steam. Games like Mario are the ones that make me angry and frustrated. What good would it do to ban violent video games? I don’t understand where people come up with this. What can they possibly have to back up their claim?
This is such a hard question to answer. I’ll try my best to explain–
First of all, there are basically two sides to this. “Violent video games make people violent” and “violent video games have no effect on people.” Both of these are both true and false. Let’s start with “violent video games make people violent.” While at first glance it may seem true, the truth is that the violent games only act as a trigger to the people who play it. A non-violent person that plays a violent video game will not be affected, and will not turn violent. Likewise, a naturally violent person will pick up the same game and will start acting violent, even if they have never shown signs of violence before in their life. As stated earlier, the violent video game acts like a trigger — if the violent person never comes into contact with the game, then I’m pretty sure that it’d be safe to say that they won’t become as violent as they could be. (I’m only saying this if the person also strays away from other violent media, such as movies.)
“Violent video games have no effect on people.” Again, both true and false. A non-violent person who KNOWS right from wrong will only play the game for enjoyment. A violent person will most likely play for the violence. Violent video games have an effect on people; it’s incorrect to say that they have nothing to do with people being violent. HOWEVER, these games are not the main cause — they just contribute to it, no matter how small of an amount.
Video games are not the main problem. The reason why so many kids are violent is because of two things: their natural personality, and their environment. You can’t do anything to stop a naturally violent kid from being violent. But you can change the second reason — their environment. This consists of family and friends, and the community that they live in.
Let me explain this further — a non-violent kid grows up in a horrible neighborhood where shootings and fights occur also every day. Their parents are constantly bickering, and later on they get to the point where they physically hurt each other. However, as this kid is non-violent at heart, they will most likely not turn violent, and even if they were affected, the results are minimal. Likewise, a violent kid that grew up in a safe, friendly neighborhood and has great, caring parents will still grow up to be a violent person. They might be able to control their violence, yes, but naturally they’re already violent.
Now video games. This becomes somewhat of a problem because, well, how often do you actually see zombies getting their heads blown up, or a man getting smashed into a billion little chunks of bloody meat after a bomb blew up inside of him? Of course, there’s always the movies, but I’m specifically talking about video games here. Violent people will embrace the sudden influx of blood and gore that they’re suddenly exposed to. If a violent person never touches a violent video game or watches any form of violent media, they will be LESS violent since they will never see a sword slicing a person in half or a grenade launcher blowing up hordes of zombies. A person’s imagination consists of things that they have experienced for themselves — if they never saw it, they can’t imagine it.
Let them play violent video games at the right age, and they’ll be fine. It’s sad to say that a lot of parents aren’t doing this, though. They could care less. I’m pretty sure that this is where the problem starts — their kid is playing violent video games and can’t tell right from wrong, and the parent is making NO effort to talk to their child about those types of things.
They’re blaming violent video games for their own mistakes. Blaming it on something else is easy. Giving fault to yourself is hard. Honestly, while violent games may contribute a little bit to the violence, it’s really the caretakers’ faults. Don’t ban violent games. Enforce good parenting skills.
